Vocal competition to honor longtime educator

The inaugural Peterson Vocal Competition will be Nov. 7 at Central Christian Church, and a winners concert Nov. 8 at the Singletary Center for the Arts.

The event is organized by Juanita Betz Peterson to honor her late husband, Kentucky education leader Roy P. Peterson, and will raise money for a memorial scholarship in his name.

Peterson came to Kentucky in 1980 to work for the Council on Higher Education, specializing in minority recruitment. He became secretary of the Kentucky Education, Arts and Humanities Cabinet in 1995, appointed by then-Gov. Paul Patton.

Peterson died in 1998.

The high school competition, with a top prize of $1,000, will be at 8 a.m. Nov. 7, and the college division, with a top prize of $2,000, will be at 1 p.m. Central Christian is at 205 East Short Street.

Ten finalists in each category will receive a minimum of $100. The application deadline is Oct. 29. Contact Peterson at jbetzpeterson@insightbb.com.

The top five performers in each category will be featured in the Musical Heritage Celebration at 7 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Singletary Center recital hall, 405 Rose Street. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students and are available at the Singletary Center for the Arts Ticket Office. Call (859) 257-4929 or go to www.singletarytickets.com.
