New Indonesian restaurant is an island among Lexington eateries

Central Kentucky's first Indonesian restaurant has opened at Todds Center. Wiwi Harrison is the owner of Orchid Flower, which serves satays, noodle dishes and sushi.

Satays are marinated meats that are grilled and served on skewers. Chicken, pork, beef or lamb satays are served with peanut or teriyaki sauces. Prices range from $13 to $18.

On Thursday, the restaurant will have a sake tasting from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and a sake representative will explain varieties and answer questions. Call (859) 543-1126 or go to www.orchidflowerrestaurant.com.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, 5 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 to 11 p.m. Friday, and noon to 11 p.m. Saturday.

A special gift for moms who lunch

Central Baptist Hospital is teaming with six Lexington restaurants and giving moms a free dessert plate on Mother's Day.

"We have delivered over 140,000 babies since 1954, and we just want to say a special happy Mother's Day," marketing director Ruth Ann Childers said. "We have commissioned a 6-inch dessert plate from Hadley Pottery that has a flower and 'Happy Mother's Day' on the front."

The plates are available to mothers who eat lunch on Mother's Day, May 10, at:

Reception follows play premiere

An after-the-play reception for author and playwright Silas House will be at Portofino restaurant at 10 p.m. Friday. The reception will follow the premiere of Long Time Travelling, House's new play at Actors Guild of Lexington.

Bluegrass Farmers Market reopens

The Bluegrass Farmers Market will open for the season Saturday. Farmers will have asparagus, rhubarb, green onions, honey, eggs, vegetable and flower bedding plants, baked goods, and jams and jellies. Herb'n Renewal seasonings has joined this market, which is at 3450 Richmond Road, in the parking lot of Pedal the Planet Bike Shop and FastSigns. Hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and 3 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Walk among the wildflowers

Horseshoe Bend Vineyards, 1187 Lawson Lane in Willisburg, will have a wildflower walk Saturday. Naturalist Sue Massek will lead the walk at 2 p.m. Lunch is available at the winery. Call (859) 375-0296 or go to www.horseshoebend-ky.com.

Tinker's Cake Shop, 109 Springdale Drive, Nicholasville, won for "best use of spirits in a recipe" at Heard It Through the Grapevine earlier this month. Winchester café starts from scratch

Small places that are open only for lunch are some of the best places to enjoy a meal with friends. Jenny and H.R. Bailey, owners of Bailey's Café, make soups, salads and desserts from scratch. Their specialty sandwich is an Italian sub with grilled ham, pepperoni, salami and mozzarella cheese, with Italian dressing for dipping. Red Lobster makes it quick for lunch

Red Lobster's new Quick Catches lunch menu offers eight dishes for less than $10. Included are wood-grilled salmon BLT, coastal soup and grilled shrimp salad, and Caesar salad with shrimp or chicken.
