Nothing says 'I love you, Dad' like picking up the tab for a change

At least three places are celebrating Father's Day this weekend with specials or other promotions:

■ Jean Farris Winery & Bistro, 6825 Old Richmond Road, is serving brunch on the patio. The three-course, prix fixe menu includes gazpacho, chardonnay chicken and pots de crème. The cost is $25, $35 with wine. Call (859) 263-9463 or go to www.jeanfarris.com.

■ Jazzman James Baker is serving a buffet at Breaking Bread Café in Winchester from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be fried chicken, top round of beef and barbecued pulled pork. Cost is $11.99. The café is at 19 Wainscott Street. Call (859) 771-6108.

■ Brown's Bakery, 1397 West Main Street, is baking its specialty cupcake flavors in 8-inch double-layer cakes. The store is accepting orders for Father's Day. Call (859) 225-8400.

From farm to farm

If you would like to see where your food is grown, take the Lexington Farmers Market farm tour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Go to www.lexingtonfarmersmarket.com to register. Tickets are $10.

Farms on the tour are: Abigail's Apiary, Bluegrass Chevre and Meadowbloom in Lexington; Barton Brothers and Evans Orchard in Georgetown; Best's Family in Berea; Chrisman Mill Vineyards and Henkle's Herbs and Heirlooms in Nicholasville; Garey Farms and Reed Valley Orchard in Paris; Home Pickin's in McKee, and Lovers Leap Winery in Lawrenceburg.

It's made with whatever's fresh

Doodles, 262 North Limestone, has added the Doodle dish to its menu.

"Every Saturday, I go down to the farmers market and hand-select the ingredients for our brunch specials," chef Lillie Ruschell Hoskins said. "It's been pretty popular. Last week was a local spinach, tomato, mozzarella, bacon and fresh basil (from the Doodles garden) omelet."

Orchard café makes weekends special

Now that summer's here, unofficially at least, you can enjoy eating outdoors at Boyd Orchards in Woodford County. The weekend specials are fish fry on Friday, back-yard cookout on Saturday night, and chicken and fixin's on Sunday.

The Apple Blossom Café is open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. The orchard is at 1396 Pinckard Pike. Call (859) 873-3097 or go to www.boydorchards.com.

Adding music to the mix

What's a picnic without a burger?

Certified as an executive chef

Mac J. McBride, an instructor at Sullivan University, now is a certified executive chef. He earned the designation from the American Culinary Federation.

Making a day of it

The Anderson County Farmers Market is having Market Day 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at The Old Depot, 1505 U.S. 127 Bypass North, in Lawrenceburg.

Activities include broom-making demonstrations with Richard Day, a Healthy Hills Honey observation beehive, fresh produce-cooking demonstrations by county extension agent Sara Talbot, a composting class by Vickie Steele, and rug-making by Naomi Hedden.

Here is what's available at farmers markets this week.

■ The Bluegrass Farmers Market, 3450 Richmond Road, has blueberries, raspberries, rhubarb, turnips, eggs, Amish cheese, fingerling and new potatoes, fresh cut herbs, lettuce mixes, greens, arugula, onions, summer squash and peas. ■ The Woodford County Farmers Market has moved its Wednesday market to Main Street in the parking lot beside Woodford Presbyterian Church in Versailles. The market is open 3 to 6 p.m. The Saturday market is on the Courthouse Square in Versailles from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This week, the market has patty pan squash, onions, herbs, beans, summer squash, tomatoes, red potatoes, sorghum, freezer beef and pork, baked goods, pizza crusts, kale, lettuce, beets, kohlrabi, flowering plants, eggs, beer cheese and pimento cheese.
