Stella's Deli has Friday specials during Keeneland meet

Stella's Kentucky Deli will have Fancy Fridays throughout the four weeks of Keeneland's fall race meet, which starts Friday and ends Oct. 31.

The restaurant, 143 Jefferson Street, will serve three- and five-course prix fixe dinners from 5:30 to 9 p.m. The three-course menu (salad or soup, entrée and dessert) is $25. The five-course dinner (salad, soup, appetizer, entrée, dessert) is $35.

Friday's menu features apple and bleu, Caesar and Greek salads; tomato bisque and cream of portobello soups; shrimp remoulade; roasted beets and chevre appetizers; rosemary-skewered filet mignon, pork tenderloin and creamy seasonal vegetable risotto.

Joining in Augusta's celebration

Parkview Inn in Augusta will have an Octoberfest celebration as part of the town's Turning of the Leaves Festival on Saturday.

The festival will be on Main Street from Riverside Drive to Second Street and will feature artists and crafts people, wineries, and a pumpkin dessert contest. BB Riverboat dinner cruises, aboard the Mark Twain sternwheeler, will leave the dock at 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. The cost is $36.95. The menu includes Texas beef brisket and barbecued chicken.

Pumpkins and lots more

Baldwin Farms' annual Pumpkins & More festival runs through October. Hours are 10 a.m. until dark daily. Shoppers may buy pie pumpkins, gourds, winter squash, apples, fresh cider, apple butter, Amish sorghum, jams, local honey, mums, corn shocks and Baldwin Farms honey-apple salsa.

Brunch and betting tips

Before heading to the races at Keeneland, take a side trip to Woodford Reserve for its Bluegrass brunch. Horse handicapper Ellis Starr of Equibase will be at the distillery on Saturdays during October, starting next week.

Chef-in-residence Ouita Michael will prepare a buffet brunch that includes Weisenberger stone-ground white cheddar cheese grits, old-fashioned Kentucky breakfast strata, biscuits and Stonecross sausage gravy, hash brown casserole, bourbon and honey-orange ham, a fall fruit compote in vanilla chardonnay syrup, sour cream coffee cake, and scones. The cost is $21.95.

Farmers market report

The Bluegrass Farmers Market will have apples, potatoes, tomatoes, winter squash, kale, turnips, peppers, baked goods, herb seasoning, soaps, jams and jellies, beef and Fayette County eggs.
