Within two hours of setting up a donation page, Lexington Humane Society had raised more than $20,000 Monday to replace its air-conditioning unit, which was used to keep the dog kennels cool.
The humane society is more than halfway to its goal of the $35,000 needed to replace the 20-ton unit. Fayette Heating & Air Conditioning is covering $10,000 of the cost, said Ashley Hammond, a manager at the humane society.
"We are keeping the dogs as cool as we can," Hammond said. Extra care is being taken, especially because of the high temperatures expected over the next week. Workers are there around the clock and are checking on the dogs every few minutes, Hammond said.
The water used to clean the concrete floors of the kennels doesn't dry without the air conditioner, though, making the floors hazardous for people, Hammond said. "We're hoping we don't have to close the adoption center to the public," Hammond said.
The humane center is seeking donations to replace the air-conditioning unit as soon as possible. There is a six-week turnaround once the order is placed, Hammond said.
