The North Lexington YMCA is closing its child development center effective Oct. 17.
Julie Balog, YMCA of Central Kentucky vice president of marketing and communications, said in an email that enrollment at the center "has been declining steadily for several years, while expenses have continued to increase."
The center now enrolls 18 children ages 2 through 5.
Parents were notified of the closing on Aug. 6.
Never miss a local story.
"The quality of our preschool program is outstanding, and we wish that we could have continued its operation," Balog wrote. "However, there are many options for parents in this area, and the demand for this program declined in recent years."
Balog wrote that YMCA decided that they could no longer continue the level of subsidy the center required annually, and that money could have a greater impact on the north side community by using those resources on other programs including after-school care, youth/teen programming and summer learning.
Balog wrote that the Northside YMCA is working with preschoolers' parents and families to help find alternate child-care programs.
