Summer is all about kicking back and making the switch from wrapping up to peeling off, to an easier way of dressing. And don't forget the shoes.
Of course, sandals are great and definitely have their place. But it would be a shame to miss out on the new, colorful generation of sneakers.
I'm not talking about those ubiquitous glow-in-the-dark running shoes you see at the gym. There has been an explosion of fun, unique designs for sneakers in the past couple of years, everything from metallics to graffiti prints.
Unlike many sandals that are best left in the closet after Labor Day, this wardrobe basic can take you from this season, right into fall and winter.
One of the best classic sneakers around is by Converse. This casual standby keeps it interesting with a great lineup of fun, modern prints.
Patterns include yellow origami-style birds soaring against a pastel purple background. Another design features vintage prints mixed together for an arty vibe.
Take fashion cues from designers who at spring shows paired sneakers with dresses, skirts and pants. Brighten a relaxed linen trouser with an eye-catching canvas flat or wear a bold high-top with a summer dress.
Zara, the Spanish fashion retailer, offers an assortment of modern sneakers for men, too. Add a dose of color to summer khakis with green-and-navy blue checks. For a more sedate look, choose the navy blue slip-ons with a cool, perforated weave and leather edging.
