For former Lexingtonian Rachel Martino, New York is home as well as inspiration.
Martino lives in Brooklyn and works in Manhattan as an assistant manager for social media for Origins, an Estée Lauder brand. She also blogs about fashion, beauty and style at RachMartino.com.
"Working in beauty is definitely a way to see great fashion every day," said Martino, a 2008 graduate of Lexington Catholic High School.
While attending Belmont University in Nashville, Martino interned at Avon. That's when she decided to share her passion for fashion and style with her own YouTube videos, in English and French.
Never miss a local story.
On her blog, which also got its start in Nashville, Martino shares outfit ideas as well as beauty and lifestyle tips. She describes her look as classic with a fun twist.
"I think a big part of my style has to do with vintage or inspired by fashions of the 1950s," said Martino. "I love pin-up looks; ... Marilyn Monroe has always been a big inspiration."
Whimsical prints are a favorite, and classic shapes. "But I love to mix it up with looks that are really cheerful and bright," she said. "And I get a lot of inspiration from other fashion bloggers and New York City itself."
We talked to Martino on Jan. 8, a chilly day in New York as well as Lexington. How, we asked, do you maintain style in the city while trying to keep warm?
"That has been one of my biggest challenges, is facing the cold. You really have to be outside a lot," she said. "Something that is really chic is a long wool-blend coat, something beyond tea length. Sort of an updated boyfriend style."
Then, of course, there are those days when you, "just have to bear up and wear a puffer to keep warm."
Add a cheerful accessory, suggests Martino: "A brightly colored hat maybe, with detailing and gloves. A great pair of leather gloves can pull a look together."
For strolling around town, "Frye boots are really great. When you're walking all the time it's good to have a pair that holds up."
