The dot, that preppy standby, is sprinkled across many a spring fashion for 2012. But what makes this classic accent modern is the new way it is worn.
There's nothing cutesy, for instance, about a towering platform sandal from Colin Stuart featuring black and white dots with a loose, organic feel. It's easy to imagine pairing these 51/2-inch heels with a sharp pencil skirt or a pair of skinny jeans.
At Trina Turk, splashy white spots spill across vibrant blueberry- and watermelon-colored backgrounds on ruffled shells and another spring trend, pleated knee-length skirts. Layer with a bright yellow cardigan for an extra dose of color.
Marc Jacobs' love of polka-dots has shown up in several of the designer's past collections. Spring's selection of Marc by Marc Jacobs bags includes an exotic white snakeskin embossed PVC messenger bag with big, bold, black dots.
Spice-colored polka dot pants from designer Robert Rodriquez come in a modern cropped cut, perfect for pairing with a boxy T-shirt or blouse, one of the newer silhouettes.
And the playful periwinkle circles and dots of a Bullseye kerchief at Madewell, J.Crew's sister label, could be a go-to accessory for spring's lighter tops or tied around the strap of a white or bright pink bag.
