The Kentucky Derby Festival opens with a bang Saturday with Thunder Over Louisville, an all-day air show and fireworks extravaganza in the skies over downtown. As many as 800,000 people are expected to crowd the city for the largest annual pyrotechnic display in North America.
Serious Thunder-heads know how to plan for the event, especially when it comes to parking. Louisville will provide an estimated 52,000 parking spaces in 10 downtown garages.
Car parking runs $10 to $20 depending on the garage. Go to www.louisvilleky.gov/parc and click on "Thunder Event Parking" in the left column for directions to each garage and answers to frequently asked questions, such as what streets will be closed.
RV and camper parking on the river is available for $200 to $300. Call (502) 584-2459. Bike parking at Witherspoon and Preston streets, across from Slugger Field, will be free from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Never miss a local story.
The air show, featuring more than 60 aircraft, starts at 3 p.m.; fireworks begin at 9:30. The show is free to watch.
