'Public Enemies': Depp, Bale make great foes
By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel
Anyone doubting the role charisma plays in the movies need look no further than Public Enemies, an old-fashioned gangster picture built on simple star power. Johnny Depp as John Dillinger and Christian Bale as FBI agent Melvin Purvis make this retelling of an oft-told tale from "the Golden Age of Bank Robbery" riveting, rousing entertainment.
'Whatever Works': Woody Allen at his usual
By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel
Woody Allen has aged into that grandpa you hate taking to Cracker Barrel because you never know what might come out of that mouth. He still has the occasional Oscar-worthy bit of wit in him. He can still land Penélope Cruz an Oscar for a Vicky Cristina Barcelona. But the clunky and dated Hollywood Endings and Scoops come along so often that it's a relief when he doesn't embarrass himself.
'Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs': Scrat steals the show
By Roger Moore The Orlando Sentinel
The blockbuster Ice Age movies have left me cold. Toons reliant on a large cast of critters (Happy Meal-friendly) with famous voices making sitcom wisecracks as their impromptu "herd" makes its way through the frozen (but melting, in the last film) landscape of the distant past, the films seem like Fox imitations of the DreamWorks style — verbal and scatological, with a message shoe-horned in as an afterthought.
