Breeders' Cup Classic winner Zenyatta's retirement has been taken care of, but the potential horse of the year will help others not so fortunate.
Two "Moneighs" — paintings made with her muzzle, whiskers, hoof and tail — will be auctioned online to raise money for ReRun, the non-profit Thoroughbred adoption program. The paintings will go on ReRun's eBay store Saturday, the day Zenyatta makes her final appearance in a parade for fans at Santa Anita Racetrack.
Zenyatta, who is in the running for racing's top honor, will retire there in a special Winner's Circle ceremony to honor her 14-for-14 winning record. Then she will head for Kentucky and her new life as a broodmare.
ReRun also will offer two Moneighs painted by Zenyatta's stablemate, Life Is Sweet, who won the Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic.
Never miss a local story.
"Zenyatta Moneighs commemorate her brilliance and exit from the racing stage, and that she and Life Is Sweet are raising needed funds to help less-famous Thoroughbreds get good homes," said Mary Simons, who heads the fund-raising program.
