Insight Communications, Lexington's cable provider, announced Thursday that it has hired the founder of sports Web site KentuckySportsRadio.com to lead its efforts to add sports coverage to its Kentucky-themed channel.
Matt Jones will host a Kentucky sports television program beginning this fall and will also be editor of the CN2 channel's sports Web site, sports.mycn2.com.
Jones will continue to run KentuckySportsRadio.com, but the site will not be affiliated with his work for Insight, company spokesman Jason Keller said.
Jones has written before for UK men's basketball coach John Calipari's Web site, but he has not done so since January and will not do so in the future, Keller said.
Jones is Insight's second hire for the channel, the first being former Herald-Leader reporter Ryan Alessi, who is heading up the channel's political coverage.
Keller said the political and sports shows are expected to be added to the channel in the fall. Their length and frequency has not been decided, he said.
The channel, available as cable channel 2, currently shows only weather coverage. That coverage is provided by an outside company that Insight has hired and declined to name.
The coverage, which includes local forecasts every 10 minutes, has had video quality problems, which Keller said Insight is attempting to fix.
"This is something that we knew as a completely new television channel would have kinks that we would need to work out," he said.
The weather coverage is different on the channel for each of Insight's five markets that have CN2. They are Lexington, Louisville, Bowling Green, Northern Kentucky and Evansville, Ind., which is just across the state line. Insight's sixth market, Columbus, Ohio, does not have the Kentucky-themed channel.
