The Better Business of Bureau of Central & Eastern Kentucky says a new scam is circulating in Central Kentucky in which people receive text messages asking them to verify their credit union card accounts. The messages, which do not name a specific credit union, falsely claim that an "alert" is being placed on the person's credit card, according to a BBB news release. The text message asks recipients to call a toll-free number and enter their 16-digit credit card numbers via an automated system. "The warning remains the same ... people should never assume that a text, voice or email message warning of a problem with their bank account or credit card is real," said Jack Frank, CEO of the organization. "Check it out first."
