The health club industry was the most complained about in Central and Eastern Kentucky in 2011, according to the area Better Business Bureau.
A couple of factors led to health clubs jumping up the list compared to 2010. First, the BBB split its home improvement/repair contractor category, which received the most complaints in 2010. That now encompasses multiple categories including roofing contractors and heating and air conditioning contractors.
Also, the area BBB is processing all complaints nationally against Lexington-based fitness chain Urban Active, which made headlines last year after customers complained about billing issues. That follows a national BBB trend. Many complaints against national chains are processed where those companies are headquartered.
The area BBB processed 4,673 complaints in 2011, up from 4,249 in 2010. Here's the top 10 complained-about industries:
1. Health clubs
2. Auto dealers, new and used
3. Books, textbooks new and used
4. Manufacturers and producers
5. Door-to-door sales, magazines
6. Television, cable/satellite
7. Auto repair and service
8. Furniture, retail
9. Roofing contractors
10. Heating and air conditioning contractors
