Kroger plans to add a gas station in front of its Leestown Road store later this year and hopes to eventually expand the grocery itself.
The Cincinnati-based grocery chain, one of the world's largest, expects to begin building the gas station in summer and open it by fall, spokesman Tim McGurk said.
The gas station will be between the McDonald's and the far right side of the shopping center at 1600 Leestown Road. Its canopy is to run perpendicular to Leestown Road, McGurk wrote in an email.
There are no firm dates yet for the expansion of the store, he said.
Never miss a local story.
"It is very early in the planning process for that particular remodel and expansion," he said. McGurk also said that enlarging the meat, produce and deli sections would likely be top priorities.
"We are excited about the additional products and services we will be able to offer to our Leestown Road customers in the future," he said.
The change is one of several by the grocery in Lexington recently.
Earlier this month, Kroger unveiled plans to demolish its existing store on Euclid Avenue next year and build a new one, more than 70 percent larger, that would have some rooftop parking.
It's also renovating its Tates Creek Centre store to add 40,000 square feet, bringing it to 105,000 square feet. The store remains open through the renovation, which is expected to be completed in the fall.
