Summer holidays are fast approaching. Looking for something to read while sitting by the pool or lake?
It is time for my annual recommended summer reading list. There are a lot of good titles in the public relations, social media, and marketing sections in print currently to help hone your skills and expand your knowledge.
Here's what authors I've interviewed for columns this past year, as well as authors to be featured in future columns, have in their beach bag or on their Kindle.
Danny Brown, co-author with Sam Fiorella of Influence Marketing: How to Create, Manage, and Measure Brand Influencers in Social Media Marketing (Que, $24.99), has three on his reading list for summer:
Never miss a local story.
■ Digital Marketing Analytics (Que, $24.99) co-authored by Chuck Hemann and Ken Burbary. The book tackles the topic of understanding all of that digital data we are presented on a daily business.
■ Ctrl Alt Delete (Hachette Book Group, $28.00) by Mitch Joel. Joel speaks to change management in terms of rebooting your business, career, and life.
■ Lean In (Random House, $24.95) by Sheryl Sandberg. This much talked about title examines women's progress in gaining leadership roles that has stalled from Sandberg's point-of-view.
Andrea Weckerle, who wrote Civility in the Digital Age (Que, $24.99), said she intends to re-read the following because, she feels they are that good:
■ Protecting Your Internet Identity: Are You Naked Online by Ted Claypoole and Theresa Payton (Rowman & Littlefield, $19.95). This title explains the importance of protecting your privacy and security online and shows you precisely how to do that. Given recent events, the more you know the better.
■ Building Social Business: The New Kind of Capitalism That Serves Humanity's Most Pressing Needs by Muhammad Yunus (Public Affairs, $25.95). Yunus illustrates, through compelling and inspirational examples, how capitalism can be used for transformative social good through the creation of what he calls "social businesses."
■ Emotional Equations: Simple Truths for Creating Happiness + Success by Chip Conley (Free Press, $24). This book teaches readers, through the application of simple yet extremely insightful formulas, the most productive way to approach challenges in our professional and personal lives.
As a newly published author, what am I reading? Currently, I'm reading:
■ Danny Brown and Sam Fiorella's Influence Marketing: How to Create, Manage, and Measure Brand Influencers in Social Media Marketing.
■ Social Change Any Time Everywhere (Willey, $34.95) by Allyson Kapin and Amy Sample Ward. This is an action-oriented guide for non-profits to help them build and mobilize their communities by integrating online channels and offline tactics.
All of these titles are available in print and e-book formats.
