■ The Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association has presented the following awards to area veterinarians: Dr. Alice W. Mills, Lexington Hospital for Cats, Lexington, received the 2013 Distinguished Service Award; Dr. Dale R. Eckert, VCA Woodford Veterinary Clinic, Versailles, received the 2013 Veterinarian of the Year Award.
■ The University of Kentucky's Merl Hackbart, professor and interim director of the Martin School of Public Policy and Administration, has been inducted as a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration in ceremonies Nov. 14 in Washington, D.C.
Hackbart was elected as a fellow this year based on his nearly five decades of service as both a university professor and administrator, and as State Budget Director of Kentucky, as well as other service to the Commonwealth and his home city of Lexington.
NAPA is an organization that was chartered by Congress as an independent, non-partisan organization. The academy gathers renowned experts from around the country for anticipation, evaluation, analysis, and recommendations on the nation's most critical and complex public management, governance, policy, and operational challenges.
■ At a recent Global Entrepreneurship Week event sponsored by the Lexington Venture Club, 25 start-up companies in the Bluegrass region were honored with the Lexington eAchievers award for receiving at least $1 million dollars in funding and/or creating five new jobs in fiscal year 2013. Together, these companies raised more than $25 million dollars in capital funds, created 89 new jobs, and have a combined average annual wage of more than $60,000.
The companies recognized included AllTranz, Allylix, AntiOp, Biomedical Development Corp., Coldstream Laboratories, Equinext, Four Tigers, Frogdice, HFL Sport Science, Hitron Technologies, iHigh.com, Invenio Therapeutics, Naprogenix, Net Law Group, New Global Systems for Intelligent Transportation Management Corp., nGimat, PDxBiotech, Seikowave, Summit Biosciences, TeleHealth Holdings, Transposagen Biopharmaceuticals, uHAPS, VeBridge, Vindico NanoBioTechnology, and Xact Communications.
