Charles Compton, who has been news director at WEKU for eight years, will be leaving the station Jan. 20 to become director of News & Public Affairs Content Development and Radio Operations & Programming at WSKG, a regional public radio station based in Binghamton, NY.
Compton described the opportunity as "a wondrous one" when he announced his new job on his Facebook page Thursday.
Compton has been in the news business for 30 years and has spent most of his career in Kentucky. "I love Kentucky and I am really sad to be leaving," said Compton. But, he said, WEKU has faced cutbacks in the news room in the last several years and the New York opportunity was too good to pass up.
In 1997 he helped start Kentucky Public Radio's story exchange, and chaired the Kentucky Public Radio Editorial Board when it established a state house bureau in Frankfort.
