SOMERSET — Working groups that are part of an effort to boost Eastern Kentucky's economy will meet for the first time Thursday in Somerset during the East Kentucky Leadership Conference.
The groups, part of the Shaping our Appalachian Region initiative, will hold public meetings this year to gather ideas on improving the economy of Eastern Kentucky through a number of approaches, including agriculture, business recruitment, education and retraining, health and tourism.
The 10 groups will meet from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Center for Rural Development on U.S. 27.
"The SOAR working groups are an opportunity for individuals, organizations and entire communities to give voice to strategies that will shape the future of the Appalachian region," said Elizabeth Burton, director of business development at the center.
Anyone may participate in the meetings but must register to attend. People can register at http://crdev.us/P3KykN.
