Natural gas prices will rise almost 8 percent beginning Friday, Columbia Gas announced Tuesday.
The Kentucky Public Service Commission approved a gas supply cost adjustment of 7.9 percent, to $6.1314 per Mcf (1,000 cubic feet). The price will be in effect until September.
Columbia Gas of Kentucky typically adjusts its prices quarterly to reflect current market conditions; natural gas distribution companies do not earn a profit on their gas commodity costs and the utility passes the cost along to customers without markup, the company said in a news release.
Based in Lexington, Columbia Gas of Kentucky serves more than 130,000 customers in 30 Kentucky counties. It is one of the seven energy distribution companies of NiSource Inc., based in Merrillville, Ind.
