Kentucky banker, coal mine operator Elmer Whitaker, 85, dies

Prominent Kentucky businessman Elmer Whitaker, who rose from the coal fields of Eastern Kentucky to build a banking empire, died Sunday. He was 85. Mr. Whitaker died at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio from complications due to diabetes, said Elmer Keith Whitaker, his grandson.
