An Owensboro man charged with defrauding an elderly couple of more than $200,000 by convincing them to invest in his nonexistent commercial construction company was sentenced to five years in federal prison Thursday in U.S. District Court.
Robert Keith Gray, 49, was indicted last year on six counts of mail fraud. Court documents say Gray told the couple he had contracts to build a shopping center and a Target store in Madisonville and to build developments along Ky. 54 in Owensboro. Between September and mid-December of 2010, the couple signed over six checks to Gray for about $220,000.
Court records say Gray used the couple’s money for personal items, including a Humvee and a motorcycle. The construction projects did not exist, court documents say. Gray later pleaded guilty to some of the charges; as part of the plea agreement, Gray cannot appeal his sentence.
