Newk's Eatery broke ground Tuesday afternoon for its 4,500-square-foot fast-casual restaurant in front of Southland Christian Church's Richmond Road campus.
Owner-operator Jay Minner said the restaurant will open in the fall, probably in November. Newk's announced in March that it would open a restaurant in Fayette Mall.
McDonald's also is building a restaurant near Southland Christian on Richmond Road, to replace the burger chain's store at 2576 Richmond Road. The store is scheduled to open in late July or early August and is currently hiring.
In addition to its California-style pizzas, salads and toasted specialty sandwiches, Newk's will offer catering and a Grab and Go cooler offering take-out meals, according to a company news release.
Newk's began a decade ago as a sandwich shop in Oxford, Miss., according to the news release, and now has 68 restaurants in 13 states.
Southland Christian Church's Richmond Road campus was built on the site of the former Lexington Mall, which once housed stores including Dillard's.
Newk's owner Matt Minner said in a news release that some Lexingtonians might be familiar with Newk's, which has restaurants in Nashville; Austin, Texas; and Atlanta.
Kurt Braun, who handles business affairs for Southland Christian, said in May that available out-parcels on the site included those where a BP station and a Perkins restaurant were.
