Kroger has requested a zone change to add about 25,000 square feet to its 45,000-square-foot Leestown Road location.
"Our Leestown customers often ask why we don't have all the same product selections here that we do at most of the other Lexington Kroger stores," Kroger public affairs manager Tim McGurk wrote in an email.
"The additional 25,000 square feet will allow us to add many of the products and services that we simply do not have room for now."
The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government Planning Commission will review the request Thursday. According to the application, the property is zoned for neighborhood businesses (B-1), and Kroger is requesting it be changed to planned shopping center zoning (B-6P).
If all goes well, McGurk said, construction would take about a year, with expansion expected to be completed in 2016.
The store would remain open during the construction.
The expansion would increase the selection in all of the fresh departments such as the bakery, organic foods, and meat sections, McGurk said.
An item in the July Meadowthorpe Neighborhood Association newsletter suggested the expansion would include a Starbucks and a Kroger liquor store, though Kroger representatives declined to comment on such specifics before the zone-change hearing. The Meadowthorpe Neighborhood is across the street from the Kroger store.
"As far as I know, I myself and most people in the neighborhood are very pleased because the store is kind of small," James Stone, a member of the Meadowthorpe Neighborhood Association, said of the planned expansion. "We've had some neighbors complain at the meetings about not having the selection that they see at other Krogers."
