Panera Bread plans to open a cafe in downtown Lexington's Park Plaza at 120 East Main Street.
Amanda Cardosi, a spokesman for Panera, said in an e-mail that the company will soon begin construction on the site, which is targeted to open in late summer.
The brand started after the cafe chain Au Bon Pain purchased Saint Louis Bread Company in 1993.
The Park Plaza location is an apartment tower located next to Lexington's central public library.
Panera now has more than 1800 cafes in the United States and Canada. There are three Panera stores in Lexington, plus cafes in Richmond, Frankfort and Nicholasville.
The eatery serves baked goods, soup and sandwiches.
