The Toy Shop at Lexington Center, which has been in business since 1984 in several locations, is closing.
Owner Beth Evans said her traditional toy store, which stocks what she calls "good traditional toys" including Breyer brand horses and Madame Alexander dolls, is closing because buying habits have changed.
"I think my retirement has happened because tastes have changed and online shopping has delivered the nail in the coffin," Evans said. "I'm the kind of person who likes to talk to customers and help them make a selection."
The store is running a promotion: The percentage discount on purchases is the number of games that the University of Kentucky men's basketball team has won. On Thursday, before the game against Hampton University, that was 34 percent.
Never miss a local story.
The store started in the lower level of the civic center, then it moved to Tates Creek Centre before returning to Lexington Center in 2003.
