Frankfort: Rockin’ Thunder Jet Boat Rides will provide the first commercial passenger boat service from Madison, Ind., to Frankfort in nearly a century, with the first trip on July 24. The recently reopened locks connecting the Kentucky and Ohio rivers ended the long separation of the two cities, reported the Frankfort State Journal.
Capt. Paul Nicholson, owner of Rockin’ Thunder with Capt. Janet Harding, said the two-day boat ride — the Rockin’ Thunder Madison-Frankfort Tour — is 155 miles round-trip.
Nicholson said the Kentucky River Authority dated the last commercial voyage to at least the 1920s. “Everything other than that had been barges for coal, gravel and lumber up and down the river,” he said.
Those who sign on for the Madison-Frankfort tour will cruise from Madison through remote, scenic sections of the river alongside dense woodland and limestone palisades more than 250 feet tall. Passengers will assist with the lock-through process by holding ropes, prepping boat fenders and pushing off from the lock walls.
