All lanes of Versailles Road were shut down between the Woodford County line and Man o' War Boulevard beginning at about 7 p.m. Saturday after a tractor-trailer carrying 31 tons of coal overturned, spilling its load. Police said the road should reopen around midnight.
The cleanup was just beginning at 8:30 p.m., and Lexington Police Lt. Mark Brand said he expected the road to remain closed for some time. "It's a big mess."
Brand said a passenger vehicle turning onto Versailles Road from Rice Road turned in front of the oncoming tractor trailer and hit its fuel tank. The tractor-trailer overturned in the inbound lane of Versailles Road, scattering coal over all four lanes.
The driver of the passenger vehicle, who was not identified, was taken to University of Kentucky Medical Center, as was a female passenger in the semi. Neither was thought to have life-threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

Brand said the driver of the passenger vehicle is believed to have been drinking and will likely be charged.
