Blossom Morgan, who founded Morgan Funeral Home in Versailles and worked there for more than 50 years, died Wednesday. She was 90.
Morgan also was known in Lexington and surrounding communities as a musician, playing the organ at New Vine Baptist Church near Lexington for more than 60 years.
Morgan's foster son John Byrd said Morgan encouraged him and his wife, Renae, to enter the mortuary business. The couple plans to take over Morgan Funeral Home.
"What was really astounding about her is she had been on dialysis for 17 years," Renae said, adding that Morgan would still "give you a run for your money."
Never miss a local story.
Byrd said Morgan's success in the business won her many accolades. Morgan was making plans to travel to Las Vegas on Aug. 8 to be honored by the National Funeral Directors and Morticians Association as a "living legend" in funeral service.
Byrd said Morgan adopted him when he was 2 weeks old.
Other survivors include two brothers — one of whom recently celebrated his 100 birthday — and a sister.
Byrd said funeral arrangements were incomplete. Condolences may be sent to Morgan Funeral Home, 140 Simmons Road in Versailles.
"The funeral home kept her alive," Byrd said. "She was still motivated by the business. Her life was the funeral home."
