Three people were injured in a five-vehicle wreck early Friday on Richmond Road between Squires Road and Shoreside Drive.
Police said their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
Lexington Police Sgt. Ronald Keaton said the wreck was caused about 3:30 a.m. by a man who was driving the wrong way on Richmond Road. The man was driving "inbound on Richmond Road on the outbound lanes," Keaton said.
Police came upon the wreck while searching for a reported drunken driver, Keaton said.
Keaton did not identify the driver and Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said the reconstruction unit had not released the name as of 4 p.m,
"At this point the driver is not being charged," Roberts wrote in an email. "The investigation is still in the very early stages."
The accident snarled traffic for hours.
At 8 a.m., the outbound lanes of Richmond Road, between Squires Road and Shoreside Drive, remained closed, and inbound traffic was reduced to one lane in that area.
Just before 4 p.m., Roberts said all lanes had reopened.
