A 7-month-old infant was critically injured Monday in a two-vehicle crash on Versailles Road, Lexington police said.
About 4:30 p.m., the driver of a vehicle traveling in the left lane on outbound Versailles Road braked rapidly near the entrance ramp to the outer loop of New Circle Road, police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said. That caused the vehicle to be struck from behind by a second vehicle.
Four people, including the infant and another young child, were in the vehicle that was struck, police said. The safety seats did not appear to be properly secured, police said.
The infant was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital in critical condition, police said.
Roberts said she did not have an update on the baby's condition Tuesday morning, but the child was "very, very seriously injured."
Versailles Road was shut down for about an hour because of the wreck, police said.
An investigation is continuing, but no charges have been filed, Roberts said.
