An intruder was shot and wounded early Wednesday morning while breaking into a Lexington apartment, police said.
The male suspect was being treated at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital as of about 8 a.m. and had not been charged, police Lt. Chris Combs said.
The suspect's injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, Combs said. Initial reports indicated that he might have been hit twice.
The shooting occurred just after midnight at an apartment in the 1000 block of Winburn Drive.
Never miss a local story.
The suspect and the woman who lives at the apartment apparently have or have had a personal relationship, Combs said.
The intruder climbed a balcony and forced open a door, Combs said.
At that point, the woman's mother, who was at the apartment, fired shots with a handgun, Combs said.
Two children were at the apartment at the time, according to initial reports.
The investigation is continuing.
