In March of 2009, 597 people in Clark County were either homeless or precariously housed, including 231 children, according to the Clark County Homeless Coalition. The group also reports that 19 people were found living outdoors, including eight children living in cars. This is the sixth highest number of all the rural counties in Kentucky.
Donations are needed by the Clark County Homeless Coalition to lower these numbers. The shelter will serve up to seven families at a time, with a goal of 42 families a year. Clients will be able to stay up to one year with the average stay of about 60 days. Services provided will include: job training, mentoring, educational opportunities, counseling, day care and financial training classes. The purpose of the shelter is to make families self-sufficient and help them find employment. Send donations to the Clark County Homeless Coalition, P.O. Box 4692, Winchester, KY, 40391.
