On Dec. 18, 2009, a group of well-wishers gathered to celebrate James McFarland's 50 years of service as a member of the North Middletown Volunteer Fire Department.
Bourbon County Judge-Executive Donnie Foley presented McFarland with a proclamation declaring the week of Dec. 18, 2009, as James McFarland Week.
McFarland became a certified volunteer firefighter with the North Middletown department in 1959 and still serves as a captain and training officer.
McFarland and his wife, Jerry Ann, have four children, all of whom have been or are still involved with the fire service. In addition, two of McFarland's six grandchildren continue the tradition as firefighters.
