At the recent Kentucky Crafted: The Market, an arts marketplace in Louisville sponsored by the Kentucky Arts Council to promote Kentucky products and support artists, Midway artist Gretchen Papka was named best new artist.
"My work is inspired by bold architecture, textured walls, utilitarian objects and beauty. Each of these is revealed and celebrated in layers of beeswax, resin and color while subtle details are mysteriously hidden," says Papka on her Web site, www.gpapka.com.
Eric and Mary Thoreson, owners of Midway's Damselfly Studio and Gallery, 126 East Main Street, received the top retailer award. The shop features the work of more than 200 Kentucky artists as well as Eric Thoreson's lamp-worked beads. Visit www.damselflybeads.com.
