These cases were referred to Lex-Care this week:
■ Rhonda Barnett, a social worker with EKU-TAP, is working with a single mother of two who needs $700 to repair the transmission on her car.
She is employed and is able to maintain her household, but she needs the vehicle to get to her full-time job, which she has had for almost a year.
Once this matter is resolved she will be able to manage on her earnings, child support and food stamps.
■ Susan Temmermand, case manager for Red Cross Armed Forces Emergency Services program, is assisting a mother of three, who is separated from her husband. She needs $750 to pay her rent.
Her husband is an Army serviceman who is deployed and serving in Kuwait. She was surprised to find that her husband had emptied their savings account and overdrawn their checking account. The direct deposit that had been going into the checking account will now be going to a new account on which he cannot draw. He has stated that he will only be sending a limited monthly amount to support the family.
The wife is graduating as a certified nursing assistant this month and has a guaranteed job. Once the past-due rent is paid she will be debt free and will move into less expensive housing in June. She plans to continue working and, if possible, begin a nurse's training course.
