Linda Gilker and Joy Dison recently presented the Lexington affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure with a check for $23,000. Each year the two friends host "Cruisin' for the Cure" at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park in Jamestown. "Cruisin' for the Cure" is a women's only fund-raiser dedicated to raising money to support breast cancer survivors. Gilker and Dison recruit the help of State Dock marina and other local businesses to make this event a success. This year, 100 women attended. Women bid on silent auction items, participate in a memorial ceremony, and celebrate the gift of life.
This was the fifth annual "Cruisin' for the Cure" hosted by Gilker and Dison. In total, the event has raised $85,000 for breast cancer education, treatment and research.
With help from events like "Cruisin' for the Cure" the Lexington affiliate has invested over $1 million in community breast health programs in its 58-county service region. Up to 75 percent of net proceeds generated by the affiliate stays in Central and Eastern Kentucky. The remaining income goes to the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure grants program to fund research. For more information, call (859) 368-7133 or visit komenlexington.org.
