Two cases, one for assistance to make a mortgage payment, the other for money to pay the annual propane heating gas fill-up, were received last week at Lex-Care.
Danielle Gilchrist, a case manager at Community Action, is working with a woman with a 3-year-old who needs $677.61 to make the monthly land contract payment.
Her husband left the household unexpectedly in early July. They are going through a separation mediation process to discuss a financial settlement and to have the land contract, which is in both of their names, put into her name only. When he left he told her the contract payment had been paid for the month. She later learned that neither the contract nor other monthly bills had been paid. This was after she had repairs done on her car.
The woman earns enough to pay regular monthly expenses, but because she paid for the auto repairs, she needs assistance to bring the land contract up to date. After that, she will be able to support herself and their child.
Never miss a local story.
Shannon Gordon, a social worker at the Senior Citizens Center, is assisting an elderly couple. They need $750 to have their heating gas tank filled for the winter season.
Both husband and wife are retired and live on a fixed income from Social Security. They plan to revise their budget so they will be prepared to pay this one time bill next year.
