Allie Whitt of Paris recently attended the 12-day Aviation Challenge at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala. The program promotes science, technology, engineering and math by training students with hands-on activities and missions based on teamwork, leadership and decision-making.
While there, Allie received the Top Gun Award, which involves a simulated fighter pilot competition among trainees. Allie trained with a team that flew a simulated F/A-18 fighter jet and learned land and water survival skills and Top Gun flying maneuvers.
This was his seventh year of participation, having moved up to the 12-day Mach III program designed for high school students with an interest in military aviation and the mechanics of flight. Students must first complete the six-day Mach III camp, which Allie did last year.
