Midway College held the 2011-12 academic year's opening convocation Sept. 8 in the Mary Lee Duthie Auditorium of the Anne Hart Raymond Center on campus. Kentucky first lady Jane Beshear delivered the convocation address preceding the declaration of the opening of the academic year.
After the convocation was the official dedication of the college's newest classroom building, the Learning Resource Center, on the site of the previous Starks Hall. Beshear delivered the dedication address and recognized the class of 1955 and the plaque placed in the building in its honor. A reception followed in the Marrs Hall administration building.
Helm to chair graduate teacher education program
Marlene Helm has been named the chair of the graduate teacher education program at Midway College, where this summer the school welcomed its first class in the master of arts in teaching program.

Helm has served as the commissioner of social services for the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government and has held positions in education at Morehead State University, Eastern Kentucky University, Georgetown College and the Fayette County and Scott County school systems.
