Requests for assistance to make a mortgage payment and an electric bill were received at Lex-Care last week.
■ The first was submitted by Natausha Ginn, a case manager at Community Collaboration for Children. Ginn advises a father of two who needs $750 to pay on his mortgage.
He is employed full-time as an emergency room certified nursing assistant. He and his wife recently separated. The husband developed medical problems that required a month of unpaid leave for hospitalization and recovery. He has received a medical release and has returned to work. Now he is struggling to get his finances in order. He works overtime to supplement his earnings and has applied for food stamps.
■ The second case came from Janice Purdy, a social worker at the Palliative Center of Hospice of the Bluegrass. She is counseling a married patient who needs $213.67 to pay his electric bill.
Never miss a local story.
Purdy discovered that her patient, who is an amputee with multiple medical problems, was not enrolled in Medicare Plan D. He is now covered under that program and has been accepted by a medical assistance program. Once the utility bill is taken care of, the couple will be able to manage on Social Security Disability Insurance payments and food stamps.
