Nearly 100 dogs, several cats, three birds, a rabbit and chicken were blessed Oct. 1 at the Blessing of the Animals held on the grounds of the Lexington History Museum during the Farmers Market.
The Rev. Carol Wade of Christ Church Cathedral conducted the ceremony, and the Choristers of Christ Church Cathedral sang for the crowd.
The Friends of Animals of Jessamine County brought adoptable animals to be blessed and to meet people who were looking for pets.
The tradition of Blessing the Animals was begun as a way to honor Francis of Assisi, the beloved 12th-century Italian saint. Francis was best known and remembered for his love for animals and the environment.
