Requests for assistance with past-due water and electric bills have been received at Lex-Care.
Jessica Zerkle, a social worker at Hospice of the Bluegrass, is counseling a mother of four children, two of whom are disabled. The mother also periodically helps her sister, who has significant health problems. She needs $123.70 to avoid having her water service cut off.
Recently, the only vehicle the family owns needed repairs and their water bill was unusually high. As a result, the water bill was partially paid, but the balance needs to be paid.
Her oldest son is severely disabled and requires a great deal of care. An SOL waiver was obtained, so there is a paid caregiver, but it is difficult for the mother to be away from her son for several hours. She has been looking for part-time employment with flexible working hours but has been unsuccessful.
Never miss a local story.
Zerkle is working with the family to develop a budget that will include making provisions for emergencies in the future. At this time the family's income is from Supplemental Social Insurance benefits the two sons receive and food stamps.
Angela Pennington, a social worker at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center, submitted a request on behalf of a mother of two who needs $95 to pay her electric bill.
The mother was working as a secretary but was discharged when she took extended periods of time off work for medical reasons. She was diagnosed with nodules in her lungs and surgery is scheduled for the summer.
The family needs help with living expenses until a viable plan can be put in place.
At this time, the only income is the unemployment benefits the mother receives and food stamps.
