A case manager at the Senior Citizen's Center submitted the first of two requests received at Lex-Care last week.
The client is a single mother who needs $549 to pay rent. The woman's 8-year-old son was hospitalized after a car accident. She took several weeks of unpaid leave to care for him, which caused her to fall behind on her rent. She works as a health aide at a local facility for disabled adults. She has returned to work but will not be paid for two weeks. Once the rent is paid, she will be able to maintain her household.
Elizabeth Myers, a social worker at Mary Todd Elementary School Family Resource Center, is working with a single mother of three who needs $588.71 to pay her electric bill and a reconnection fee.
The woman, who is employed as a factory worker, had surgery last week and will be unable to work for the next two months. She and her children are living with a family member until the bill is paid. Once she returns to work, the family will manage on her earnings and food stamps.
