To reduce waste, Franklin County is participating in the SC Johnson Green Choices Recycling Challenge, a nationwide contest that aims to increase household recycling participation in 50 communities.
The community with the highest reported recycling participation will receive a $100,000 grant from SC Johnson to put toward a local sustainability project. The challenge kicks off a new partnership with Recyclebank, a company that rewards people with discounts and deals for taking everyday green actions.
The SC Johnson Green Choices Recycling Challenge aims to increase consumers' recycling, and it will contribute to SC Johnson's goal of becoming landfill-neutral by 2016.
The company makes household products including cleaners, insect killers and Ziploc bags.
To participate, Franklin County residents must sign up for a free Recyclebank account and report their recycling activity. To do that, go to Recyclebank.com/greenchoices and follow the prompts to get started. Residents then may earn points by reporting their recycling each week on the Recyclebank Web site. A leader board on the Web site will track progress each month, and the winning community will be announced in January.
