McConnell Springs will host an ice cream social from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Other free activities include a scavenger hunt, hurl the squirrel (aka corn hole), wood magic, a fossil dig and temporary face tattoos. The Plein Air Painters of the Bluegrass will demonstrate their skills from 9 a.m. to noon. The event is free but donations will be accepted with proceeds benefiting McConnell Springs. The park is located at 416 Rebmann Lane. For more information, call 225-4073.The first annual Roll for the Cure, benefitting the Lexington Cancer Foundation, will be Aug. 25 in downtown Lexington. Bicyclists of all skill levels can choose between routes of four, 10, 25, 50 or 100 miles.
The event will begin at CentrePointe the evening of Aug. 24 with a carb-load buffet provided for the riders and their guests along with live entertainment and testimonials by cancer survivors. Riders will depart the following morning at 7:30 from the High Street parking lot across from Rupp Arena. A closing celebration for the riders and their guests will be held at CentrePointe on Saturday evening, featuring dinner and live entertainment.
There is no entry fee to participate in Roll for the Cure; however, all riders age 12 and older are required to raise $500 to participate in the 25-, 50- or 100-mile routes. All riders age 12 and older are required to raise $100 to participate in the four- and 10-mile ride. Children younger than 12 can ride with a participating adult in the four-mile ride.

Jacobson Park entrance getting a face lift
The entrance to Jacobson Park will get a makeover beginning this week. The park's Richmond Road entrance will be enhanced to allow for safer and easier access for park visitors.
Improvements will include creating two incoming and outgoing lanes, moving the entrance farther into the park, and replacing the masonry walls and gates. The park will remain open during this work, which is expected to last six weeks.
Beaumont YMCA to hold financial classes
Dave Ramsey's popular Financial Peace University will be held at the Beaumont Centre Family YMCA, located at 3251 Beaumont Centre Circle. Classes will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The course will meet once a week for nine weeks and will provide families and individuals with practical tools to gain control of their finances and set themselves up for long-term financial success. Graeter's to host dog costume contest
Celebrate the dog days of summer by bringing your furry four-legged friend to Graeter's from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 21 for a free treat. At 7 p.m. Graeter's will host the Most Uniquely Dressed Dog costume contest, with the top three dogs and their owners receiving prizes. Graeter's will also be accepting donated items for the Animal Care Society, the Southern Indiana Rescue and the Lexington Humane Society.
