Ginseng harvesting banned in Daniel Boone National Forest for 2017

Ginseng is a slow-growing perennial plant. It is frequently collected and used in drinks or dietary supplements. Anyone buying and selling ginseng, other than harvesters, need to be licensed in Kentucky. A ban prohibiting ginseng harvest in the Daniel Boone National Forest has been extended through the 2017 harvest season, from Sept. 1 to Dec. 1.

New athletic facility design approved by Clark County school board

Designs for new athletic facilities at George Rogers Clark High School were given final approval at a recent Clark County school board meeting. The plan for the new facilities includes a 63,500-square-foot, 4,100-seat gym attached to George Rogers Clark High School and a stadium that will host football, track and soccer events. It will cost about $21 million.

Petition for rehearing filed in Clark County quarry zoning lawsuit

An appellate court’s decision regarding a Clark County judge’s decision to allow for agricultural land to be rezoned for an underground limestone quarry may be reheard by the Kentucky Court of Appeals. On Thursday, the Southwest Clark Neighborhood Association filed a petition for a rehearing after the Court of Appeals affirmed a Clark County judge’s decision that allowed for a rezone. The association felt as though the Court of Appeals misconceived aspects related to the lawsuit in its opinion.

House fire in Winchester

Firefighters with Winchester and Clark County fire departments battled a mid afternoon structure fire that heavily damaged the house at 15 Linden Ave. Several units from the Lexington Fire Dept. were dispatched to Winchester to provide fire coverage while Winchester firefighters were busy with this fire.
