The former Blue Grass Baptist School on Red River Road would become a mixed use development with senior housing, medical offices, community center and an adult and child care center under a zone change approved Thursday by the Urban County Planning Commission.
The roughly 5-acre property at 3743 Red River Road, just off Trent Boulevard in south Lexington, is being developed by Afton Community Development LLC.
Part of the school gymnasium will become the community center. The school building will be turned into senior housing, said Tom Martin, a city planner. A community garden is also proposed for the site.
No one spoke against the proposed development during Thursday’s commission meeting.

Also Thursday, the planning commission approved several zone changes on a little more than 11 acres for 31 homes and seven townhouses at 2311 Armstrong Mill and 3539 Kenesaw Drive. The Atchison Heller development is called Harper Woods. No one opposed the zone changes from agricultural urban and townhouse residential to neighborhood residential.
The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council must approve zone changes for both properties before the two developments can move forward.
