Lexington officials have a couple of tips for folks headed out to Keeneland and other activities this weekend: arrive early and stay late.
The events taking place downtown and extensive road work will make it likely that drivers will face delays and detours this weekend.
Besides the opening weekend of Keeneland's fall meet, there's also the Festival Latino de Lexington that begins on Saturday, a Kings of Leon concert at Rupp Arena Saturday night and Second Sunday events.
The city has made some changes to lessen some of the pains of driving downtown. They include opening Maxwell Street at South Limestone between 9 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 a.m. Sunday and running special downtown from parking lots at the Red Mile and Applebee's Park to Rupp Arena and the Robert F. Stephens Courthouse Plaza.
The following streets will be closed during the weekend:
■ South Limestone will be closed between Waller and Virginia avenues from 6 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday.
■ Short Street will be closed between Upper Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard from about 7 p.m. Friday through midnight Saturday.
■ The turn lane and one through lane of North Limestone between Main and Barr streets will be blocked from 7 a.m. to midnight Saturday.
■ On Sunday, the city will close essentially a rectangle of downtown. Both Main and Short streets will be closed between Deweese and Mill streets, which also will be closed in that area.
